The Real Boko Haram

This picture is indeed graphic, showing what Boko Haram would do anything to there own and the Nation of Africa doing nothing about it, The soldier is clearly saying that when drums sound to loud. It might be a way to express their freedom or a sense of freedom they still think they still have. In the background of the photo, you can see skulls to show that this was not the first time they murdered someone. 

This relates to many of the soldiers in A Long Way Gone. The soldiers were going to or have possibly killed many of they people that they have run into. 

The African Nation might have feared the north because in the background it says terrors of the north, They might have brain washed them to fear the north of Africa or maybe more modernized countries like America.
